The mission of Libby's Legacy is to assign advocates who will help Stage IV Breast Cancer patients, giving them the gift of TIME!  Libby's Legacy will kick off the partnership by assigning a patient advocate and then send those Stage IV patients on a week long trip to Alaska or the trip of their choice! It's the best way for my mom to experience those places—through the eyes and laughter of others.  So instead of Extreme Home Makeover's "Move that bus!!", our goal is to "Move That Red Tape!!".

 Libby's Story

Robin and her Mom, Libby Maynard

Let me introduce you to the most amazing woman my sister and I have ever known...

Our Mom, Libby Maynard, was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2005 and endured a double mastectomy, chemo and radiation. Her attitude was amazing. She always had a smile on her face and had the most positive outlook even in the face of her own diagnosis. She had more faith than anyone I've ever known! She made it through her initial treatments and then was informed that the cancer was back in September of 2005. She worked hard and loved her job. Unexpectedly in November of 2005, she was let go from her job for being unable to perform her duties due to her cancer treatments.  This loss added stress, financial hardship and insurance struggles to the battle she was already courageously fighting so hard to win. In January 2006, I took her for a second opinion. The doctor said the average woman in her condition lived three to five years. He told her to go do all the things she ever wanted to do. She didn't accept this opinion, of course, and with a smile on her face, said "Well, that's the average woman, and there's nothing average about me!".

My Sister, Marty and I asked our Mom what she always wanted to do but hadn't yet. She wanted to cruise to Alaska and she always wanted to see Italy.  The cruise was planned for May.

She passed away 6 weeks later on February 28, 2006. We miss our Mom and we want change for cancer patients!

Research is vital and we need a cure.  However, we can't just dismiss the amazing women and their families fighting this devastating disease right NOW! We need to challenge some of these employment policies and fight to change insurance rights with health related job loss. It's about time! I watched my Mom quietly stress about health insurance and life insurance and then there were, of course, the hours spent on the phone with red tape regarding Social Security Disability and Medicare. Those hours should have been spent laughing and talking with friends and family.

The mission of Libby's Legacy is to assign advocates who will help Stage IV Breast Cancer patients, giving them the gift of TIME!  Libby's Legacy will kick off the partnership by assigning a patient advocate and then send those Stage IV patients on a week long trip to Alaska or Italy! It's the best way for my mom to experience those places—through the eyes and laughter of others.  So instead of Extreme Home Makeover's "Move that bus!!", our goal is to "Move That Red Tape!!".

In true Libby form, my mom still wanted donations made in lieu of flowers at her funeral, to go to Hospice and to the organization that let her go from her job! She stood up for what she believed and didn't want to dismiss the good that they do. Neither do I. She also believed their policy regarding employees diagnosed with terminal illnesses needed changing. So do I.

Help us spread the word, help us make change! Help us raise awareness and take care of our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters: OUR cancer patients! Let them enjoy their families so that they can fight this fight—not just surviving—but LIVING! Our mom was FUN. Our mom was strong. Our mom raised us to make a difference in this world and that's just what we intend to do!
